Wagrain is snow sure!
Winter season in Wagrain from the beginning of December until April
A winter season in Wagrain lasts from the beginning of December until April (one or two weeks after Easter). Although we are relatively low (850m -2000 metres) compared to other ski and glacier areas in the Alps, Wagrain faces north and benefits from winter temperatures and good snowfall.
To balance out the natural elements and normal ups and downs of the weather, the Bergbahnen AG Wagrain is equipped with the latest snow making equipment.
Over 250 snow making machines supply over 95% of the ski pistes with artificial snow. Investment and technological advances have created an infrastructure on the mountain which guarantees the efficient use of energy and effort. In perfect conditions of temperature and humidity, a basic snow covering of all the pistes is possible in 4 days and nights.
Artificial snow is different from natural snow mainly in that it is produced technically at very high speed. The “ingredients” of this snow are mainly water and air, so machine produced snow is naturally clean and of high quality. An artificial snow covering of 20 cm is the same as a natural snow covering of about 50 cm.
The necessary water for this procedure comes from flowing water or from one of the three reservoirs with 45.000 m³, 55.000 m³ and 58.000m³ capacity.
Along with the economic aspects of ensuring enough snow for a ski area, artificial snow also has an ecological purpose. A covering of snow produced by machines and made solid by good preparation protects the underlying flora from damage which can be caused by skis and snowboards.
In summer the piste surfaces turn into blooming alpine pastures of amazing biodiversity and are mainly worked on by local farmers. The „Flying Mozart“ gondola and the Grafenberg lift are open in summer from the middle of May until the beginning of October.
Whether it is for a mountain walk along the Salzburg alpine paths, a mountain bike tour or a visit to Wagraini’s Grafenberg – the mountain world around Wagrain is also a wonderful destination in summer.
